History of Reiki
Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. It became a lost healing art until rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the mid to late 1800's. He began an extensive study of the healing phenomena and studied ancient sutras. He found the answers to some of his questions in the Indian Tibetan sutras, but not the knowledge about how to access this Energy. Following a 21-day meditation on the Holy Mountain in Japan, Dr. Usui reportedly received the vital information about which symbols allow one to activate and how to utilize this universal life energy for healing.
Dr. Usui called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan. He established the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and was its first president. He also initiated 16 teachers into his Reiki tradition, including Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, who established the first Reiki Clinic, the Reiki hand positions and the levels of initiation and training. Mrs. Hawayo Takata was one of his students who went onto being the first American Reiki Master. The lineage was passed onto 22 students, including her granddaughter, Ms. Phyllis Lei Furumoto. As a traditional healer, my students will be learning the 'Usui System of Natural Healing'.
Reiki is useful in supporting the treatment of serious illnesses, injuries, emotional disorders, and stress-related conditions. It does not take the place of Allopathic treatment or prescribed medications. It is recommended that clients inform their physicians that they utilize Reiki as a healing modality
Since Reiki's introduction to the Western world, its use has spread dramatically worldwide because of its effectiveness in reducing stress responses and enhancing relaxation and a sense of well being.
